Why does the universe have the particles and forces it does? VERSF is trying to answer that question by building them from more basic ideas about distinguishability and the formation of physical facts. This September audit takes stock of how far that effort has progressed towards explaining the Standard Model—the framework physicists use to describe elementary particles and three of nature’s fundamental forces.
The biggest advances concern how the theory’s ingredients actually work. The audit reports clearer mathematical mechanisms for how matter particles move, how the Higgs field spreads through space and how the formation of successive facts connects to time. It also identifies a stronger connection between currents and the structures intended to produce forces. These developments matter because a theory must do more than produce promising numbers: it must explain the machinery behind them.
On that basis, the audit raises its estimate of the research programme’s maturity from 60–65% in August to 68–72% in September. This is a planning judgement, not a claim that 70% of particle physics has been proved or that VERSF has a 70% chance of being correct. It reflects a programme in which more of the mathematical machinery is in place and the remaining problems are more precisely defined.
Some decisive challenges remain. VERSF still needs to establish the physical strengths of the forces, produce a complete account of neutrino masses and mixing, and calculate the strength of the process that keeps quarks bound together. Its different results must also work together within one consistent calculation. The audit keeps that distinction explicit: an attractive numerical match is encouraging, but it is not a prediction if extra choices are needed to obtain it.
The picture that emerges is of a programme moving from broad construction towards harder, more focused tests. The next major advance must show that VERSF’s starting principles select the physical answers themselves, without those answers being supplied along the way. That makes this audit both a record of progress and a clearer statement of what the theory must deliver next.
