Is This a Proof? Yes — but Conditional

The P versus NP problem asks a deceptively simple question:

If you can verify a solution quickly, can you also find it quickly?

You can check a completed Sudoku in seconds. But finding the solution from scratch can take far longer.

Is that gap fundamental — or just a limitation of current algorithms?

This work argues that the gap may be fundamental — not only mathematically, but physically.

A Conditional Route — Grounded in Physics

The result is conditional. It does not claim to have solved P versus NP in the formal Clay Institute sense.

Instead, it proves something slightly different — and potentially deeper:

If efficient computation must obey the same locality and irreversibility constraints that govern physical processes, then polynomial-time discovery of NP solutions is impossible on a large and natural class of hard problems.

The remaining condition is not “P ≠ NP” restated.
It is a structural statement about how information behaves in the real world.

What the Paper Proves Unconditionally

Most of the framework does not depend on that final condition.

The paper rigorously establishes that any successful NP solver must eliminate a large amount of uncertainty — what we call search entropy. To turn a problem instance into a verified solution, uncertainty has to collapse into a definite classical fact.

And classical facts require irreversibility.

Irreversibility, in turn, requires entropy to be dispersed somewhere. That principle is not speculative — it underlies thermodynamics, Landauer’s principle, and the physics of computation.

From there, the mathematics shows:

  • Advantage cannot appear out of nowhere.
  • It must accumulate incrementally.
  • Each computational step can only contribute a bounded amount of progress.
  • That progress must flow through identifiable interactions with the problem instance.

For broad families of algorithms — logical deduction systems, statistical correlation methods, shallow circuits, and bounded-memory computation — this incremental entropy reduction necessarily leaves a detectable structural footprint.

And those footprints are already ruled out on hard instances by known lower bounds in proof complexity and learning theory.

These pieces are rigorous and independent of any assumption about P versus NP.

The Single Remaining Condition

What remains is one sharply isolated structural assumption:

There is no way to eliminate search entropy “all at once,” without passing through localized interactions with the instance.

In other words, no algorithm can collapse global uncertainty without interacting with specific parts of the problem in a structured way.

If such a shortcut existed, it would represent a new kind of computation — one in which uncertainty disappears globally without leaving local traces.

But nothing in physics behaves that way.

Information does not vanish.
Entropy does not evaporate.
Irreversibility always has a mechanism.

To violate this condition would be the informational equivalent of extracting work from a system in perfect thermal equilibrium.

Why This Matters

Many results in computer science are conditional. Cryptography assumes one-way functions exist. Quantum advantage relies on assumptions about circuit complexity.

What makes this framework different is where the condition comes from.

The remaining assumption is not mathematical convenience.
It is physical admissibility.

If P were equal to NP, it would not merely overturn complexity theory. It would imply that global entropy reduction can occur without localized informational flow — something we have never observed in physical systems.

In that sense, P versus NP may not be just a mathematical boundary.

It may reflect a deeper structural law about how information, time, and entropy interact.


Why Having a Simple Answer Doesn’t Make a Problem Easy

It is natural to think:

“If a problem has a clear, simple answer, surely there must be a fast way to find it.”

Surprisingly, that is often not true.

What matters is not how simple the answer is, but whether the problem gives you clues as you search.

Imagine a locked box with a number code:

  • There is exactly one correct code.
  • The code itself is short and simple.
  • Every wrong attempt gives the same response: “No.”

You can try codes forever, but you never learn whether you are getting closer.

Even though the answer exists, and even though it is simple, finding it may require an enormous number of guesses.

The difficulty is not the answer.

It is the absence of directional information.

Now imagine a different version of the same game.

Instead of silence, you are told:

“You’re getting warmer.”
“You’re getting colder.”

Suddenly, the search becomes structured.
You can rule things out quickly.
Uncertainty shrinks step by step.

The difference is information flow.

Some problems leak information. Others do not.

The hard problems studied here are of the second kind. They do not hide the answer. They hide the path.

The Core Idea in One Sentence

A problem is hard not because the answer is complex, but because there is no physically admissible way to tell whether you are getting closer.

That is why this result is conditional — and why the condition is powerful.

It connects computational hardness not merely to cleverness or ingenuity, but to the fundamental behavior of entropy itself.
